New Years Resolution #1

Eat healthier. I've been vegetarian for over thirty years and lately, Joelle and I are leaning in the direction of veganism (dairy's already gone from our larder) but there's always room for improvement diet-wise. So we're going to be eating a lot more raw food next year. And that means more juice. The pictured concoction is spinach/carrot/apple which wasn't half bad. Not root-beer-float delicious but not make-a-face horrible either. Somewhere in between I guess, but pretty much off the scale in terms of nutrients.

Sunday Signage > Gabriola United Church

The tents are gone from Krall Plaza in Nanaimo and Occupy has moved on but while they were there, the protesters received ample support from a number of Gabriola organizations and individuals.

Music Tonight!

Tonight is the annual Concert For The Commons at the Phoenix Auditorium. Locals, the tickets are all gone but there'll be a few seats availble at the door. Hope to see you there.

The photo was taken in my friend Steve Elder's recording studio.

Last demo of the year?

Will BC Ferries ever reduce their fares? Nobody's holding their breath but islanders continue to ask.

Sunday Signage > No Smart Meter

With the full support of our Islands Trust representatives, hundreds of Gabriolans are refusing to allow BC Hydro to install the new Smart Meters. Like this property owner, some fear health risks. But many others simply reject a ridiculously expensive program that puts Canadians out of work and poses a very real risk of privacy compromise. What I find amazing is that most of the rest of the province isn't putting up much of a fight. What's up with that?

Hopefully, we won't have too much trouble with poachers this year but there have been a few reports of gunfire after dark.

Global Theme Day > Action Photo

The action here is the group finger and it's being directed at BC Ferries for the constant rate hikes that continue to choke island economies all up and down the Salish Sea. A number of photographers were in front of the crowd (we were assembled at the ferry terminal) and sent their own versions of "the finger" photos to the powers-that-be. Never did hear their reply though.

Prayer Flags

My mother-in-law got a new iPhone and was kind enough to pass her old model on to me, complete with the Hipstamatic camera app. Since it'll be in my shirt pocket from here on out, you can look for more images like this from time to time. Thanks Linda!
