Living Roof

The cob wall at The Commons got a living roof this year. And speaking of The Commons, locals be sure to get your tickets for next Thursday's benefit concert at The Phoenix.

ABC Wednesday > S is for Storyteller

Ivan Coyote is a national treasure. She's famous for her live performances (storytelling) but her novel, Bow Grip, is easily the best fiction I've read this year. She was on Gabriola recently for the 7th annual Poetry Gabriola Festival. Let's hope she comes back soon.

Not really cold by Canadian standards but pretty darn chilly for Gabriola in November!

Snow on the Ginkgo

This morning, Gabriolans awoke to the first snowfall of the season. We may be in for a cold winter.

Island Books

I love this store. I also appreciate the fact that it's right next door to the library!

Poets By The Sea

This year's Poetry Gabriola Festival was over-the-top in a good way. Amazing! And the beautiful setting (Dragon's Lodge) helped to make it so. Click HERE to see a slideshow of the whole weekend. Locals, mark your calendar for next year!

Poetry Gabriola Festival

Here's a snap from last night's opening ceremony of the seventh annual Poetry Gabriola Festival. If it looks like fun, it was! Islanders, this is a not-to-be-missed event so get on over to Dragon's Lodge this weekend and check it out.

Goodbye Old Swings

I wonder how many Gabriolans and visitors have had a go on these rope swings at Whalebone Beach? Here's yours truly on the ropes almost exactly two years ago

But it looks like they'll be history if the RDN gets it's way and ditto for the sturdy stairs that lead down to the water. Seems a shame to me and a case of over-regulation for no good reason. Maybe they know something I don't but I was on those stairs just a few days ago and rickety they ain't!

Cadillac

I have a soft spot for big old Cadillacs so I couldn't resist a snap of this beauty at the end of a dead end street. I know, I know, they represent over-consumption and all that but hey, my dad had one and when he passed, it came to me. It was a triple black '76 Coupe deVille and it's hood was the single largest piece of sheet steel ever used on an American passenger vehicle. Driving it was like driving your living room.

Global Theme Day > Public Transportation

For public transportation on Gabriola, the Green Bikes are the only game in town. Here's a file photo of the fleet from last September.
