Nestlings

It would appear that one of these little barn swallows isn't hungry. Or maybe he/she is just the silent type.

This doe isn't too shy but her twin fawns are so no pictures of them...yet.

Sunday Signage > Thank You

You've seen this sign if you've ever been to The Roxy. The sound system is amazing so you definitely wouldn't want to spoil it by putting your rear end through a speaker cone. The hat is Stevie B's summer lid and it sometimes does double duty as the till.

After weeks and weeks of dry weather, we finally got a good long soaking rain. And we're supposed to get more. Fingers crossed...

Sunday Signage > Colleen's

In terms of square footage, Colleen's isn't a big department store but they sure make use of every inch of floor space. And in the summer, the merchandise spills out onto the sidewalk.

Events

If you live in a big place, it would be perfectly logical to assume that in a small place like Gabriola, there'd be nothing much to do. Ha! My dance card stays full without even trying. On top of all the public events big and small, there are the private affairs, volunteer work, etc. Days are full around here to be sure. Now, I'm off to water my gardens.

Thanks to all you Gabriolans who came out to The Roxy for the anniversary slideshow last night. You raised $133 for the PHC Food Bank.

One Year

Today marks the one year anniversary of GDP. I started this blog for three reasons:
1) I was (and am) totally in love with this place.
2) I knew I'd get to know it better with a camera.
3) My photo chops were dull and I figured I'd get back on my game if I made a commitment that involved producing an image a day that I was willing to show the world.
365 days later, it seems my goals have been met and I'm even more smitten with this little island in the stream.

Thanks to my fellow Gabriolans who have welcomed me into their lives, to Mrs. Snapper for posting when I was away and for being the best wife a guy could ever ask for and last but not least, thanks to everyone who has paid a visit and especially those of you that have taken the time to leave a comment.

I have no idea what this next year will bring but at least I've got tomorrow's photo in the hopper. Island life one day at a time.

If you're here on Gabriola, please join me this evening at The Roxy for a slideshow, 300+ images from Year One on the big screen complete with instrumental music from local artists and who knows, maybe even cake. Doors open at 7, slides go at 7:30.

Lap Steel

This old lap steel is from the 1940's, brand unknown but possibly an Oahu. Photographed in the owner's kitchen.

Boats Large and Small

That's the Tsawassen ferry in the background, chugging away eastbound towards Vancouver. And in the foreground, a classic V-hulled rowboat. In the pre-ferry days, intrepid Gabrilolans used to take these across to Nanaimo.

Sunday Signage > Share The Road

A snapshot from last Sunday's Tour De Gabriola. As I circumnavigated the island on my old bicycle, I definitely took note of how considerate the drivers were. Much appreciated.

New Growth

The deer seem to like these fir shoots so I tasted them, kinda lemony. I wonder if one could make pesto out of it?

Dennis' Hands

Dennis Lakusta is a singer/songwriter and visual artist. He's currently touring to support his new CD, Heart On A Sleeve and will play a local show at The Roxy this coming Saturday.

He's a semi-regular at Sunday Soup and he brought his beautiful maple Gibson J-200 one day a while back so we could make a photo. I knew I had a keeper when I saw how his fingers echoed the inlays on the fingerboard.

Paparazzo

Here's a lucky grab shot of a couple of celebs leaving Raspberry's Jazz Cafe Saturday evening. Their limo was waiting. Really. Not sure about the leggy blonde but the gal in front is the spitting image of Marilyn.

Sunday Signage > SLOW

Today is the annual Tour De Gabriola, a non-competitive cycling event which raises money for our medical clinic. I'll be riding the 27km circuit on my '74 Motobecane fixed gear road bike so look for a snap or two later in the week.

Spiders

Compared to my native Tennessee, Gabriola is virtually bug-free. But there are spiders. These little guys hatched out this morning.

Found on a friend's front porch and photographed TTV style. Art is everywhere on Gabriola. I wish I knew who made this piece so I could ask them about that Mona Lisa smile.
