BTUs

According to the old saying, wood warms you twice. But by the time the smoke from this pile of fir and arbutus goes up the chimney, it will have warmed me not two but three times: Once when my neighbour and I loaded it into my truck and hauled it to my driveway, once when I split and stack it and one more time when my wife and I fire up the woodstove this fall.

Great photo, lovely in black and white!

I used to cut, split, and burn my own wood and boy did it warm me, three time sand more.

Additionally when I carried it in and stacked it.

Nothing better than a cord of wood. so, do you use a mechanical splitter, or use a splitting ax?

The grain is really striking in these images.

Funny how such a simple subject can be so arresting. Great pic.

Most of my subjects are pretty simple. I enjoy the challenge of making something cool out of something ordinary. Thanks to Leslie and everyone for their kind words.

My mother lives on wood heat in the winter, and arbutus is reserved for the coldest nights. Great shot.

Elaine, your mom is right about arbutus: It burns long, slow and hot. Wood heat is just the best. Having lived in homes heated by natural gas and electricity, I'll take the feel of wood heat every time. It soaks into your bones like no other source of warmth.

Very true! My husband and I will have wood that warms us thrice, as well.
